Workaround custom pages
I'm using the community version and it has come to my attention that custom pages are something only associated with top tier versions of Bonita. For my project to work users will need to register and having a main page where it's a simple homepage, these things seem to work best by using custom pages however it seems I'm locked out of it, is there a way of working around it or should I look for a different tool or am I looking at this the wrong way?

I think you're looking at it the wrong way. I'm using community exclusively and all my pages are custom built to me design and requirements.
Your requirement doesn't sound that difficult and should be easy in the process step application tab.
Have a look at Develop a first business process application which uses basic custom pages.
