Button Data sent on click via javascript variable

In 7.1.5, we have a javascript variable in a button's Data sent on click property, that constructs the payload to send, as well as sets other page variables. In 7.2.x, it seems the Data sent on click script is executed for any key-press or mouse-click, instead of only when the button is clicked. If this was a planned change to button behavior in 7.2.x, how are we now supposed to determine when the button is clicked? Thanks for any insight you may provide on this.
