The new Bonita is here!

By popular demand - we’re bringing back Bonita Community binaries!

With this release, we’re strengthening our commitment to open source, ensuring that Bonita Community Edition users can continue to innovate and build on the Bonita BPM-based process automation platform.

This Bonita Community 2024.3 comes with several enhancements:

A new second-level cache system.

  • Users searching for data get more accurate answers more quickly with improved caching and better search capabilities.
  • Improved caching also results in faster performance as read operations are more rapid.
  • With heavy loads (high number of concurrent users, high number of concurrent cases) there is less stress on the database with fewer queries reaching into the database and fewer requests needed to find the right information.

This version of Bonita Community also has an update to Java 17, which brings security updates, performance improvements and language enhancements.

  • Stay ahead of potential threats with the security patches and updates, safeguarding workflows and data.
  • Experience a boost in performance ensuring operations run efficiently.
  • Java 17 introduces new language features and enhancements, such as Sealed Classes.

And for the end-users of Bonita-automated business applications:

  • For better search results on all APIs and application pages, the new search engine algorithm supports “like-based” search. It returns results in a few seconds, finding all matching records for a given search string anywhere in a phrase or a word, in all APIs and the Bonita pages included by default on Bonita User Application, Bonita Administrator and Super Administrator Applications.

The new version of the Bonita Community platform has some new limitations, too - and we also want you to know about these changes:

  • Limited number of cases: Your Bonita applications will be able to handle up to 150 cases per month.
  • Supported databases: Only H2 and PostgreSQL databases are natively supported.
  • Single process limitation: Your Bonita engine will be able to run/execute only one process at a time, which means it can handle one task or operation in sequence rather than multiple tasks running simultaneously.
  • Automatic data collection: Anonymous user data collection is embedded and cannot be disabled.

While we’re glad to see the return of the Community binaries, which is a fantastic step for open-source users, the introduction of limitations in this release is disappointing. The 150 cases per month limit, single process execution, and enforced data collection in an open-source edition go against the flexibility and openness that drew us to Bonita in the first place. These restrictions are forcing us to consider alternatives like BAMOE that don’t impose such barriers.

We hope Bonitasoft will reconsider these limitations to better support the open-source community.

This is indeed good news!

Since I am using Bonita in a BPMS course at my university it is good to know that there will be open source binaries for current and future Bonita versions, so that we can benefit from enhancements and bug fixes. Since our students develop only small process applications which aren’t use in production, we can live with the limitations.
