A closer look at Bonita 2021.2: New Bonita user applications

Let's continue diving into some of the new features of Bonita 2021.2 as the release is coming very soon. Whether you are using Bonita Community or Bonita Enterprise, you will find in this series of posts some great new functionalities and improvements.

If you were already using Bonita 2021.1 or earlier, you know Bonita Portal.

With Bonita 2021.2, we say goodbye (for real) to Bonita Portal, and hello to the new Bonita user interfaces.

A bit of history

The Bonita Portal is now replaced by 4 customizable applications:

  • Bonita User application
  • Bonita Administrator application
  • Bonita Super administrator application
  • Bonita Applications Directory

This change brings more consistency to the different kinds of Bonita user interfaces as our users will navigate through applications only.

User and administrator applications

Bonita user and administrator applications are examples of what Bonitasoft calls “Living Applications.” They can be customized, or deleted if ot needed.

They are available by default in Bonita Runtime and embedded in Bonita Studio. You can access them for testing just by clicking on the icon on the top menu bar, or by deploying your project.

As with any other Living Application, they are downloadable as Bonita Studio applications from the welcome page:

And you can update them, or delete them, in Bonita Runtime.

Note that deleting a Bonita application won’t remove all associated pages, but only the application descriptor. You can still find all pages in the Resources menu.

Super administrator and Applications Directory

Both applications are core to the operation of the Bonita platform. Therefore they won’t be downloadable as Bonita Studio applications, nor removable.

Thanks to the Application Directory, users will have a single entry point at login, depending on their role.

Both new applications come together with customizable error pages with a redirect to the App Directory. This new application architecture is so much simpler than before.

Need to customize them? It’s easy.

All pages available in the Resources Menu of the Administrator or Super Administrator applications can be exported and imported in Bonita UI Designer to be customized.

If you are working in Bonita Studio, you can also import the Bonita User Application or the Bonita Administrator Application. All pages that appear in the project explorer can be modified in the UI Designer and will be displayed as soon as you launch the UI Designer.

New Bonita user interfaces make your life easier

For you, developers

  • Embedded applications in Bonita bundle

  • Customizable error 403, 404, 500 pages

  • Modified custom profile navigation management (Bonita Enterprise only)

  • Creation of application logos

For you, users

  • Consistency: you are navigating into applications only

  • App Directory: a unique URL to access all applications

  • A logo and a description per application

For you, administrators

  • Rich Super Administrator application

  • Application logos added in the Administrator and Super administrator applications

  • Profiles removed from the “Organisation” menu and directly linked to applications

  • Custom profile (Enterprise Editions) are automatically migrated
